Epinephrine, but not dexamethasone, induces apoptosis in human retinal pigment epithelium cells in vitro Possible implications on the pathogenesis of central serous chorioretinopathy

چکیده
von Humboldt Foundation, Bonn, Germany. ABSTRACT Objective The pathogenesis of central serous chorioretinopathy is poorly understood. It is believed to be due to dysfunction of the retinal pigment epithelium and/or choroid, and has been associated with elevated levels of epinephrine and administration of corticosteroids. Epinephrine and corticosteroids have previously been shown to induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) in various types of cells. It has also been shown that experimentally-induced central serous chorioretinopathy is associated with degeneration of the underlying retinal pigment epithelium. The objective of this study is to investigate whether epinephrine and dexamethasone, a corticosteroid, can induce apoptosis in cultured human retinal pigment epithelium cells. This may help elucidate the pathogenesis of central serous chorioretinopathy.

Central Serous Chorioretinopathy after Rhinoplasty
We report a case of central serous chorioretinopathy after rhinoplasty for deviation of the nasal septum in a 23-year-old Caucasian man. The patient complained of deterioration of vision in the right eye 4 days after rhinoplasty. At presentation, visual acuity of the right eye was 6/9 with metamorphopsia. Fluorescein angiography revealed a focal retinal pigment epithelium leakage and optical co...
متن کاملMorphological Changes of Retinal Pigment Epithelial Detachment in Central Serous Chorioretinopathy
Normal retinal tissue consists of the nine-layer sensory retina on the vitreous side and onelayer retinal pigment epithelium on the choroidal side. Serous retinal detachment is a detachment of the sensory retina from the retinal pigment epithelium. Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) is a condition causing local serous neurosensory detachment in the macular region. CSC causes circular or ova...
متن کاملMicrostructural Changes in Central Serous Chorioretinopathy Documented by Spectral-domain Optical Coherence Tomography
central serous chorioretinopathy (cSc) was first described more than 140 years ago. due to the rapid development in modern imaging methods, better understanding of changes occurring in the retina in cSc is possible. Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SdocT) has increased our ability to study this disease, especially microstructural changes during active phase and after resolution of ...
متن کاملOral administration of a curcumin-phospholipid delivery system for the treatment of central serous chorioretinopathy: a 12-month follow-up study
BACKGROUND The therapeutic effects of Meriva®, a curcumin-phospholipid (lecithin) delivery system (formulated as Norflo® tablets), on visual acuity and retinal thickness in patients with acute and chronic central serous chorioretinopathy was previously investigated in a six-month open-label study. METHODS In this follow-up study, visual acuity was again assessed by ophthalmologic evaluation a...
متن کاملSubretinal exudative deposits in central serous chorioretinopathy.
The presence of subretinal exudation in a patient with neurosensory detachment of the macula frequently suggests the diagnosis of choroidal neovascularisation. A retrospective chart review of newly diagnosed cases of central serous chorioretinopathy revealed 11 patients, seven men and four non-pregnant women, who had plaques of subretinal exudate, which presumably were fibrin. Each of these pat...
